What Is Live Edge Wood? Is It Right for Your Project?

Most lumber is processed to be straight, uniform, and consistent. In many cases that's exactly what you want. Whether we're building cabinetry, architectural millwork, flooring, or furniture, having stable, predictable material is important.

But sometimes the most interesting part of a tree is the part that would normally be cut away. That's where live edge comes in.

What Is Live Edge Wood?

A live edge slab is a piece of wood where the natural edge of the tree is left intact rather than being cut perfectly straight. Instead of milling the entire slab into a rectangular board, the outer shape of the tree is preserved. The bark is typically removed, but the natural contours, curves, grain patterns, knots, and character of the wood remain.

No two slabs are exactly alike; all of it is determined by the tree itself, not a machine. Every piece has its own shape, grain pattern, and personality that was formed naturally as the tree grew. This is where the live edge aesthetic lives and thrives, in the natural movement of the wood itself, designed to be highlighted rather than squared off.

Where Our Live Edge Slabs Come From

At Rescue Slabs, our live edge material starts right here in the Hudson Valley. We source logs locally, mill them ourselves, dry them in our kiln, and build each project in our studio. Because we control the process from the beginning, we know exactly where the wood came from, how it was dried, and how it will perform over time.

Typically Slabs will be pushed through multiple companies, from logger to mill to distributor to fabricator, losing story and accountability along the way.  At Rescue Slabs, we take a different approach. From tree to finished product whether it's a table, mantel, countertop, or bar top, everything happens under one roof. This gives us complete control over quality and allows us to match the right slab to the right project.

What Can Live Edge Be Used For?

Dining Tables

Live edge dining tables are by far the most popular application. The natural shape of the slab becomes the focal point of the room and creates a piece that simply can't be replicated with manufactured materials.

BarTops and Countertops

A live edge bartop or countertop adds warmth and character while still remaining highly functional. These pieces work especially well when paired with stone, steel, or modern cabinetry.

Conference Tables

Many businesses are moving away from generic conference furniture and choosing custom live edge tables instead. The natural material creates a more welcoming and memorable workspace.

Mantels and Shelving

Live edge doesn't always have to be a large statement piece. Floating shelves and mantels are a great way to introduce natural wood character into a space without overwhelming the room.

Common Questions

Will It Crack or Warp?

Properly dried wood is extremely stable. The key is making sure the material has been dried correctly before fabrication begins. This is one of the reasons we kiln dry all of our material on site before it enters production. Wood is a natural material and will always respond slightly to its environment, but when processed correctly it performs exceptionally well for generations.

Is the Bark Left On?

Usually not. In most cases the bark is removed and the edge is sanded smooth while preserving the natural shape of the tree. This creates a cleaner appearance and a more durable finished product.

How Do You Care for Live Edge Furniture?

Maintenance is simple. Keep the piece clean, wipe up spills promptly, and avoid extreme changes in humidity whenever possible. Depending on the finish used, periodic maintenance may be recommended over time, but most pieces require very little attention.

Can Projects Be Custom Sized?

Absolutely. Since we mill and stock our own material, we can often select slabs specifically for your project. Whether you're looking for a dining table, conference table, mantel, bar-top, or custom furniture piece, we can help find material that fits your size and design requirements.

Do You Keep Live Edge Slabs in Stock?

Yes. We maintain an inventory of live edge slabs in a variety of species, sizes, and styles. If you're looking for a particular size, wood species, or character, there's a good chance we already have something that would work for your project.

Is Live Edge Right for You?

Live edge isn't the right fit for every project. If you're looking for a clean, highly uniform appearance, traditional millwork or furniture may be the better choice and we can help you with that as well. But if you're looking for a piece that showcases the natural beauty of the tree and becomes a focal point in the room, live edge is hard to beat. If you're considering a live edge dining table, bar-top, mantel, conference table, or custom furniture project, we'd be happy to show you available slabs and discuss options.
